Life is Biggg!

Driving from Tri-Cities north on 395 to Spokane. Right as you get outside of Pasco, you'll see a big ugly yellow building on the right side of the freeway. That yellow building is home to Jim's Pacific Truck Garage, however, the side of the building says “Jim’s Pacific Biggg Truck.” First of all, that “Jim” is my uncle, and second, I don’t know why the word big has two g’s added onto it. It doesn’t make a ton of sense, especially because biggg isn’t even in the actual name of the company.

Last night, at church, I was introduced to a new idea, I suppose it is an idea I always knew, I just wasn’t aware that I knew. I had never heard it put the way it was. We are called to live a biggg life. Now, I didn’t hear it with three g’s but if I had to imagine how big I was supposed to live in Jesus, I would imagine it would have three g’s. I imagine Jesus looks at our lives, of safety, and security and says, “Come on guys, this is not what I taught you, this is not why I came.” Last night at church, we talked about restoration. It was the fourth part of a series highlighting the fundamental ideas of Creation, Fall, Resurrection and finally Restoration. To be honest, we I heard the resurrection sermon, I didn’t know what the fourth sermon could have been. Turns out, it had a biggg impact.

Yes we have ugly hearts, and yes Jesus came to make them pretty again, He came to wear our ugliness in shame on the cross, but He also came so that we might be filled up (with the Spirit in face) and live a biggg life. A biggg life that we certainly don’t deserve.

Jesus gave the pastor this scripture from Romans 8: 9-13

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

We have an obligation, not to the flesh, but to live according to the Spirit, and we will live. So I guess it could be confusing. Yes we will live, but where in that passage does it say we need to live a biggg life? Well I guess it doesn’t. It never says, “So live a biggg life.” But it’s what it says about the flesh that makes me think we are called to live a biggg life, a life that is beyond itself.

If we live according to the flesh, it is simple, it says we die. But if we live according to the Spirit, there is a much better outcome, we live. We live with the Spirit of the One (Him) who raised Jesus from the dead. Let me get this right, we are living with God inside of us? The God who we have always asked, “Please reveal yourself to me!” is living inside of us? Well shucks, I guess I better start living a pretty biggg life.

Because when Jesus came, He lived a biggg life. He healed people, He performed miracles, He took the weight of the sins of the world on his shoulders, seems like a biggg task. He did things real… biggg! And God gave people in the old testament the power to do biggg things. But only if they had faith in Him, only if they put Him first. So I guess I’m asking all of us to look at how biggg our lives are. Are they biggg enough?

I never will understand why the truck garage spells big with 2 more g’s. But I do understand that the kind of life that Jesus calls us to, the life he exemplified for us probably deserves a lot more g’s.

The Start

I’m on a reckless pursuit to know Him more. I’m on a reckless pursuit to introduce others to the Lord of my life. I’m on a reckless pursuit to become more like Him. I’m hell-bent for Jesus.

Hell-bent (adj.): determined to achieve something at all costs, reckless pursuit.
Reckless (adj.): without thinking or caring about the consequences of an action
Pursuit (noun): the action of following or pursuing someone or something

I’m currently reading “Love Wins” by Rob Bell, and yes, I do know what people think about Rob Bell but I figured I would create my own opinion about the guy and His theology rather than buy into anyone else’s opinion. In his book he raises and answers many questions about heaven and hell, using his interpretations of what the bible teaches. He describes the phrase “hell-bent,” as people who will go to the gates of hell to achieve something, to reach a goal. As I read this, I realized this is exactly what Jesus did. He shouldered every sin man ever committed, and suffered entrance into the gates of hell. He recklessly pursues freedom for His kingdom.

As Christians, or “little Christs,” it is our purpose and calling to become more like Him. It is our mission to recklessly pursue freedom for His kingdom, at all costs. Welcome to the life we are invited to live, a reckless pursuit for Jesus, a hell-bent confidence for the Author of the world.

God has called me to a beautiful place, Malibu Club, about 100 miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia located on the Princess Louisa Inlet. This Young Life camp has been serving high school students since 1954. God blessed me with he chance to serve as the kitchen intern this summer. Each week for eleven weeks, 300 high school students will experience Malibu and the redemptive power of Jesus Christ.

It is my hope to share in this blog, the incredible encounters I experience with Jesus Christ.
